WordPress SEO involves technical configurations, keyword research, on-page SEO, quality content creation and link building to improve your site’s rankings and increase organic traffic. Technoz Software helps build and optimize WordPress sites for businesses throughout British Columbia. We ensure your site is fast, secure, responsive and continually improving your SEO to convert search traffic into sales.
The top of Google is where most clicks will come from so anything outside of this won’t be seen. If your WordPress site isn’t coming up on search engines for what your customers are searching then you’re losing out to your competitors by not getting those leads. Luckily WordPress is one of the most SEO friendly platforms and if set up correctly will give you a consistent source of free high intent traffic.
We build and optimise WordPress sites for businesses throughout British Columbia. Here is how we do it:
What Is WordPress SEO and Why Does It Matter?
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of optimizing your site so search engines understand, trust and rank it highly for relevant searches. With WordPress sites you need to ensure your technical set-up, content and authority are optimized.
The benefits include:
- Increased organic traffic – You can expect to receive more free traffic from users searching for your products/services.
- Improved credibility – High ranking sites are trusted by users and search engines.
- Compound results – SEO will compound over time where as with advertising, once you run out of budget your results come to an end.
- Higher quality leads – Users finding your site via search often have a high intention to buy.
1. Build a Fast, Trustworthy, User-Friendly Website
Google rewards sites that deliver a great user experience. Its quality guidelines highlight that sites should be experienced, expert, authoritative and trustworthy (E-E-A-T). To deliver the best user experience you should focus on:
Improve Your Page Speed
Slow loading pages can cause frustration for users and will have a negative impact on rankings. To improve the speed of your site you can:
- Opt for a lightweight and well coded theme.
- All images should be compressed and scaled down.
- Make use of caching and a CDN.
- Uninstall any plugins that are not required.
- Test your site regularly using Google PageSpeed Insights and make sure to address the issues highlighted on the report.
Structure Your Site Clearly
Search engines follow links to crawl your website. Having clear content organisation, logical grouping, a clear heading structure (1 H1 tag per page, then H2 and H3 tags) will help your search engine bots understand your website. You should also ensure your most important pages (About, Contact, main services) are easily accessible from your header/footer.
Secure Your Site with HTTPS
SSL certificates are used to encrypt information on your website and browsers will give visitors a warning if they try to go to a website without an SSL. Most hostings will offer this for free so you really have no reason not to. When you set it up ensure all your pages are redirecting to the HTTPS version of your website.
Make It Mobile-Friendly
Most people use their phone to browse. You should ensure that your site is responsive. Google will mostly rely on the mobile version. Use a responsive theme. Ensure that it looks good on various screen sizes. Buttons, forms and menus should be easy to use on a small screen.
If your current site is slow, outdated or hard to use on mobile, a redesign may be the best starting point. Our team provides website development in Surrey and builds sites designed to perform well in search from day one.
2. Install a Reliable SEO Plugin
An SEO plugin will help you do a lot of the technical bits. The most popular ones are Yoast SEO, Rank Math and All in One SEO. Whatever you go for, it should help you:
- Generate and update XML sitemap
- Update your titles and meta descriptions per page
- Add schema
- Control what pages get indexed
- Breadcrumbs and canonical URLs
Choose one plugin and set up correctly. If multiple SEO plugins are running they can conflict and cause issues with duplicate tags.
3. Make Sure Search Engines Can Index Your Site
In the WordPress settings menu under Reading, you can choose to make your site not indexable by search engines. This is often enabled during development and for some reason many sites go live with this enabled. Ensure it is disabled.
Then:
- Submit your XML sitemap in Google Search Console.
- Use the URL Inspection tool to confirm key pages are indexed.
- Set low-value pages, such as thin tag archives or internal search results, to “noindex” so they don’t dilute your site’s quality.
4. Do Keyword Research Before You Write
Keywords connect what people type into Google with the content on your pages. Before creating or updating a page, decide which search term it should target.
- One primary key phrase and a few secondary key phrases.
- Ensure you strike a balance between keywords that are too competitive and keywords that have reasonable search volume. Very popular phrases will be difficult to win so it’s often better to target more specific longer phrases which may convert better and are easier to rank.
- Ensure the keywords match the search intent. Are they looking to learn, compare or purchase? Your page should reflect this.
- Every page should have its own unique focus. If you have two pages targeting the same keyword they will compete against each other.
- Use your keywords naturally. Include them in your title, 1-2 headings and first paragraph. But don’t stuff them in.
Tools such as Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs and Semrush can help you find terms and see how competitive they are.
5. Write Strong Title Tags and Meta Descriptions
This is what will appear on the search engine results pages, so it can heavily influence if someone will click on your link.
- Use between 50-60 characters for your title tags, include your primary keyword at the beginning of the title.
- Use between 150-160 characters for your meta descriptions. This should give a quick summary of the page and encourage clicking.
- Make sure to have unique titles and meta descriptions for each page.
Think of them as ad copy. They should accurately describe the page and make it the obvious choice.
6. Use Clean, Readable URLs
By default, WordPress can generate long URLs from your page titles. In Settings → Permalinks, switch to the “Post name” structure, then shorten individual URLs so they’re concise and include your main keyword. For example, /wordpress-seo-guide/ is better than /the-complete-beginners-guide-to-wordpress-seo-in-2026/. Avoid changing URLs on live pages without setting up a 301 redirect.
7. Optimize Your Images
Images make content more engaging, but unoptimized ones slow your site down.
- Use descriptive file names, like custom-wordpress-website-design.jpg instead of IMG_4821.jpg.
- Provide alt text so that people can understand what is in the image, this will also give you more context for search engines.
- Optimize your images and deliver them using modern formats, such as WebP.
- Lazy load your images so that those below the fold only load when needed.
8. Keep Your Content Unique and Helpful
Search engines love unique and relevant content. Avoid having duplicate content on different pages and be cautious of similar pages (such as multiple location pages which just change the city name). Every page should be unique.
In addition to being unique, it is good to have in-depth, clear content. Answer the questions your customers are asking, provide examples and ensure the content is up to date. Regularly check old posts and update any that are getting left behind.
9. Control Comment Spam
Open comment sections will cause spam issues. You can manage this by making comments a moderator only option (Settings > Discussion), and using an anti-spam plugin to filter any remaining comments. If you are not using comments then turn them off.
10. Build Smart Internal and External Links
Internal linking is used to link related pages on your website. This will help users find additional content, help search engines see the relationships between pages and distribute authority across your site. Use relevant anchor text and link from high traffic pages to the pages you want to rank. For example, a business serving Metro Vancouver might point readers to a dedicated Burnaby website design page when discussing local web presence.
External links to trustworthy sources add value for readers and show that your content is well researched. Link only to sites you’d genuinely recommend.
11. Earn and Monitor Quality Backlinks
Backlinks are still one of the most powerful rank factors. The quality of these is far more important than the quantity. You can build high-quality backlinks by:
- Creating helpful original content
- Writing blog guest posts for reputable industry websites
- Listing on local directories and trade associations
- Collaborating with other businesses, suppliers or community groups
Use a tool such as Ahrefs or Google Search Console to check your backlinks. If there are any low quality or irrelevant links pointing to your site, make sure to keep a record and use Google’s disavow tool if necessary.
12. Track Performance and Keep Improving
SEO is an ongoing process. Once you have set up your Google Analytics and Google Search Console it’s important to look at these regularly to identify:
- Pages that are attracting the most organic traffic
- Keywords that you are ranking well for and keywords that are close to page 1
- Pages with high bounce rates or low engagement
- Crawl issues such as broken links and pages not being indexed.
You can then use this information to improve your content, fix any issues and know what to create next.
13. Keep Your Site Secure and Up to Date
Hacked or infected sites can be marked or completely removed. To protect your site rankings:
- Keep WordPress core, themes and plugins updated.
- Use a good security plugin and firewall.
- Use strong passwords and two-factor authentication.
- Back up regularly.
- Remove any unused plugins/themes.
14. Don’t Forget Local SEO
Local search is your best opportunity if you’re serving a particular area. Make sure you have your Google Business Profile set up and fully completed. Ensure you are using the same name address and phone number across all online platforms. Get real reviews from your customers and make sure you have pages tailored to your location with unique content. Businesses in places like Kelowna and Maple Ridge often find that strong local signals are what separate them from larger competitors.
